Unit 2 Intro | Survival & Argumentative Writing


Objective: Jedis will be able to annotate and summarize the argumentative essay “The Cost of Survival” and then write their own 1 paragraph TIEAIEAC arguing their position, using evidence from the text, regarding the following question: Should people in life-or-death situations be held accountable for their actions?

  2. Unit 2 Introduction: The Cost of Survival Packet 
    • Congratulations with finishing Q1 midterms. You are going to be starting a new unit called Survival. At the end of this unit, you will be writing an argumentative essay in which prove your own opinion with regards to the following question: Should people in life or death situation be held accountable for their actions? Today’s short text, called “The Cost of Survival”, is an example of the type of argumentative paper you will write for your final in December. Every reading you do from here until then will be related to Survival and you will be gathering evidence for your paper along the way.” 
      • While in class with the substitute today you must: 
        • Read and annotate the article “The Cost of Survival” 
        • Write a High School Quality summary paragraph of the article 
          • This will be a timed write summary of the reading (10 min.) 
        • Consider your position on the following argumentative prompt: Adventurers should be responsible for their rescue. 
  3. With any remaining time, students can begin their homework Quickwrite TIEAIEAC.

Homework:
  1. Read 30 (Week 10)
  2. Study Central/South America (Trial 3 is Oct 31/Nov 1)
  3. Study for N. America (Retakes close 10/29-- last week of October will be by appt only.)
  4. Pg 125 Academic Vocabulary-- Complete worksheet & make flashcards
  5. Quickwrite: Argumentative (Opinion with evidence) TIEAIEAC
    • Write a 1 paragraph TIEAIEAC on the worksheet (you do not have to type or turnitin online) arguing your position regarding the following question: Should people in life-or-death situations be held accountable for their actions? Using evidence from the text to make your case.
