Names are power | Read Around

Objective: Jedis will be able to begin our "story" together by saying our names and by telling the history of how we came to have them in a story or poem. Jedis will understand that members of this class are part of the curriculum-- which means your stories, histories and individual lives count.v

Agenda:
  1. Jedi Meditation (5)
  2. Jedi Journaling (5)
    • “If how I was feeling right now was a color, I’d feel somewhere between the colors _______ and ______. Write for the next 5 min about why you feel this way and include anything that is on your mind.
  3. Grade World Maps and learn to study with whiteboards.
  4. Read Around
    • Circle Up. Sit where you can see each person. Your voice matters. In this class, we will listen for whose voices get heard and whose get silenced.
  5. Positive Commentary
    • Sometimes we come in to new grades carrying past histories with each other that make us fearful of sharing. This is a new year, the first of four on your way through high school and to college. This journey will take courage. We will take the first step, together, in solidarity and support.
      • So, as each person shares their name story or poem, write their name and then write a compliment to them. Focus on the positive and be specific-- if possible quote them or praise their delivery.
        • After the writer reads, they will chose 2-3 of us to share out our compliments, but the writer will receive all of our praise to read on their own. Sign your slips so the writer know who wrote them so thoughtfully.
          • You can:
            • Respond to the writer's style of writing
              • What did you like about how their piece was written?
            • Respond to the writer's content
              • What did the writer say that you liked? What parts of their story spoke to you?
            • Respond by sharing a memory that surface for you
              • have you had a similar experience? What did this poem remind you of in your own life?
            • Write down down lines, ideas, words, or phrases that you like and why you liked them. Remember to compliment
